What to expect during camp this year - Safety during the Coronavirus pandemic:
This season will bring some changes due to safety and efforts to improve on some programs. It is our goal to make your camp the brightest part of the Scouting season and we are always seeking ideas and partnerships from troop leadership in and outside our council borders. We will work hard to ensure that the programs and merit badges that you have been accustomed to remain the same with new opportunities added on a regular basis.
The cost of camp:
In early 2020, it was approved that in order to provide the best outcome and quality of your week at camp, we needed to increase the cost to $295/Scout and $195/Leader. This was mostly due to the increased prices of food and property development and maintenance. The cost will not be increased to this level for 2021 but will remain at $265/Scout and $165/Leader. We will also continue to provide program materials for all merit badges free of extra charge.
Capacity of camp:
In an effort to keep your Scouts, leaders, and staff as safe as possible, Maumee Scout Reservation will continue to operate for 5 sessions of camping beginning on June 13th and ending on July 24th with no camp from July 4-10. We have limited the capacity of each session to 100 Scouts and up to 50 leaders so pre-registration is strongly recommended. We are also reviewing if particular merit badges will have a class size limits due to space or to meet the COVID recommendations at that time. This will also ease the congestion within the dining hall and keep campers cooler!
Meals at camp:
MSR will be serving breakfast at 8:00 am and dinner at 6:00 pm each day of camp. We are asking units to provide their own lunches and prepare them at your campsite throughout the week. We are confident that this will help in reducing the spread of germs and give campers a longer rest period during the afternoon from 12:00-2:00 pm. MSR will provide ice for coolers, free of charge, on an as needed basis. Scouts may also use this opportunity to prepare meals for the Cooking Merit Badge or rank advancement.
We are very conscious of sanitation and safety while Scouts are “living” at camp and are focused on reducing risk where we can. Our camp has decided to not provide the canvas wall tents, cots, or platforms for this summer as we would not be able to maintain a high enough level of cleanliness/sanitation throughout the season. We are asking units and families to provide tents and other bedding to use while at camp and are encouraging single occupancy or same family tent assignments. Ranger Ed has constructed several hammock stations within many of the campsites for you to hang around on and we will be selling hammocks and tents at a reduced price, if needed.
We need to “do our best” to keep a Scout “clean” by utilizing sanitizer in campsites and program areas many times throughout the day, conducting health screenings and temperature checks before and during arrival, wearing face coverings throughout the day, social distancing whenever possible, and maintaining hygiene each day. As the camping season approaches, our team will review many areas of the property and program to determine if alterations need to be made for safety.
Even with these modifications, we are so excited for camp and look forward to spending time OUTSIDE at beautiful Maumee Scout Reservation.
