New District Director
Hello, my name is Kelly McMurphy and it's great to be in Indiana and
I look forward to serving you in my new role as District Director.
In the next few months I hope to meet each of you as we work together
to serve the needs of our youth.
I'd like to give you a brief bio on my background. I was born and
raised in Scouting. My father is an Eagle Scout and a Silver Beaver
recipient and my brother and I are both Eagle Scouts. I started in
Cub Scouts in 1979 and have been a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout,
and Explorer as a youth member. I've been to Philmont twice as a
youth and attended the 1985 National Jamboree. I also spent six summers
working on camp staff in my home council and attended National Camping
School as a volunteer in 1993.
As a professional I've held positions in three councils: Greater
St Louis Area Council, Great Rivers Council in Columbia, MO and Jayhawk
Area Council in Topeka, KS. I began my career as a professional in
1994.
I met my wife, Tammy, while at an Explorer event and have been happily
married for 13 years. I have two children, Sarah and Rachel.

Venturing Advancement Program
Does Venturing have advancement? Yes it does! This dates back to
1950 when the Silver Award was introduced for older Boy Scouts. The
award was available from 1950 until 1966 and over 18,000 Silver Awards
were earned. With the onset of Venturing in 1998, a new Venturing
Advancement Program was initiated. Different levels involve the Bronze,
Gold and Silver Awards.
The Bronze Award is earned in an area of interest to the Venturer
such as sports, religious life, arts and hobbies, outdoor, and Sea
Scouts. The specific requirements are in the Venture Handbook and
on the Venture website.
The Gold Award is based on the Scout designing his or her own program
for personal growth in the areas of citizenship, leadership, service
to others, and total fitness; they must be a Venture Scout for 12
months and must also earn at least one Bronze Award.
The Silver Award, or the highest advancement for Venturers, includes
earning one Venture Bronze Award, the Gold Award, and demonstrate
proficiency in emergency preparedness and leadership by completing
the Venture Leadership Skills Course and participation in Ethnics
in Actions Course and a board of review.
In addition, a Venture Scout may earn a Ranger Award based on high adventure and
outdoor activities completing
eight core requirements consisting of wilderness first aid, wilderness
survival, emergency preparedness, communication, leave no trace, cooking,
land navigation and conservation as well as four electives ranging
from backpacking to winter sports.
For Sea Scouts, the Quartermaster Award is the standard of excellence
and recognition.
Furthermore, two newer awards have been created outside of the advancement
chain noted above. These are the Quest Award for personal fitness
and the Trust Award for religious and community life. More details
about these awards can be obtained through the Council Office or the
Venturing website at www.scouting.org .
We encourage all Venture Crews to develop an advancement program within
their Crew and at the Council level. We have initiated several opportunities
that may be harder to develop in an individual Crew.

Day Camp Approaching
We are now getting ready for this year's Day Camp. This year's theme
is Akela's Round Up and will be held July 10-12 at the Martinsville

but also their leaders and parents as well. Your skills, ideas, and
creativity will be welcomed and needed. Please contact April Stevens
(Camp Director) at 765-342-0671 if you would be willing to help.
You will not regret helping and will find it to be a very rewarding time with
the
boys. We hope to see each and every Cub and Cubber from all over
the District come and have a Great 2007 Day Camp.

month will be presented. If the time or places of these meetings
change, we will notify you as soon as possible. May will see a Special
Cooking presentation for the Roundtable and June is Round Up Training
for Cub Scout leaders. We almost had 100% last year, let's see if
we can get all our leaders-key people to the unit building experience.
Get Ready for Day Camp
Mark your calendars now for the White River Trails District Day Camp.
The Theme for this year's camp is "Akela's Round Up" and will take
place June 12-14 at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Bedford. Registration
forms will be mailed out to all Scouts and additional information
will be available at your Pack's Blue and Gold Banquet and Roundtable
meetings.
Volunteers are needed in all areas and your help would be greatly
appreciated. Your Pack may also need help with walk-alongs during
the day camp. If you would like to help and have lots of fun while
helping make our day camp a continued success please call Patty Phelps
at 812-279-3884 or Trisha Pickering at 812-648-3167. Come join the
fun-filled day camp experience. You will not regret it!
District Recognition Dinner
Congratulations go out to some special leaders from the district that
were recognized at the District Recognition Dinner on March 8th by
fellow leaders for outstanding service. The District Award of Merit
recipients were (Districts Highest Award): Mike "Cowboy" Hall and
Karen Heuby. Many other leaders were recognized for their outstanding
service and dedication to the Scouting program. We would like to
thank all of the district officers, committee members, and commissioner
staff who spend much time to ensure that the Scouting program in White
River Trails is successful for the youth. We would also like to thank
Buck and Judy Mullis for arranging all of the details and for your
help in hosting a wonderful recognition dinner.
The district also recognizes and thanks all the leaders involved in
the Scouting program. The Boy Scouts of America continues to be a
wonderful youth program because of your hard work and dedication. Thank you and
keep up the
good work!
Popcorn
Just a reminder that if your unit sold spring popcorn, the money is
to be turned into the Scout Office no later than May 25th. For those
who were unable to sell popcorn this spring, don't worry, you will
have another opportunity to sell popcorn this fall. This is a wonderful
opportunity for your group to earn money to participate in the many
things that Scouting has to offer.
Training
As you know, training and advancement go hand in hand in providing
a quality unit that boys and leaders will take pride and have a great
experience in. In May, Hoosier Trails Council will be hosting Outdoor
Leader and Baloo training at Camp Maumee. This is a wonderful time
for new leaders to see what the boys experience when earning rank
advancement and to show you a few things. This training is also required
for the "Trained" patch and for Cub camping. Come out with your gear
and have a great weekend at Camp Maumee. Also, please don't forget
about Woodbadge training coming up. For more information please call
the Scout Office.
