Policy on Scout Participation in Political Events
With the presidential election coming up in 2008, it is a good time
to restate the BSA's long-standing policy regarding the participation
pation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events.
Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies
at political events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however,
they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers'
platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers construe
their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition,
photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are
not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.
Volunteers and professionals must be alert to situations that would
imply that the BSA favors one candidate over another. Strict observance
of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniformed
Scouts and leaders in political events is mandatory.

Camp Louis Ernst News
An excellent Camporee hosted by Lenni Lenape and attended by Valley
Trails and the Hoosier Hills District provided a great backdrop for
a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new winter cabin at Camp Louis
Ernst. Over 550 camp participants and visitors for the ribbon cutting
swelled numbers to well over 600 for the weekend. Bagpipe music set
the stage! Recognition of the people and companies who have given
support to the cabin project was provided including a carved walking
stick by Mr. Don Riley to Mr. Dave Bear, head of the Madison Consolidated
Schools Trades Program, Architect Donnie Ball and heartfelt appreciation
for the project was given by Mr. Tom VandeWater, former camp ranger
and staff member at Louis Ernst.
The ribbon cutting team included Dietrich Hess, Lloyd Cassidy, Eagle
Scouts Ryan Strimple Troop 607, Brandon Johnson (representing the
Order of the Arrow) and Mary Brown (representing Venturing and the
professional staff). Commemorative patches for Louis Ernst are available
at the Trading Post and may be used for weekend camping outings for
units as well.
Our next event was May 20th which was one year to the day of the original
reunion and fundraising activities for the new cabin. Festivities
included a recognition dinner for the Order of the Arrow and donors,
and started at 4:30 with a fundraising auction of Camp Louis Ernst commemoratives as well as additional walking sticks
which are true works of art by Mr. Don Riley. The auction started
at 5:30.
A well deserved thanks goes to all of the supporters, donors, workers,
and everyone with an interest in the project and Camp Louis Ernst.

District Roundtables
The District Cub and Boy Scout Roundtables are held the second Thursday
of every month at the First Christian Church in Martinsville (89 S.
Main St) starting at 7:30 pm. This is when Council and District information
is passed out. It is also when we cover special subjects pertaining
to Pack and Troop and discuss the monthly theme. It is important
that each Pack and Troop is represented so you can get all the latest
information to help provide your unit with the best program possible.

Day Camp Approaching
Plans are well underway for this year's Day Camp and it is still not
too late to register. The deadline for t-shirts has passed, but you
can still enjoy the many activities camp has to offer. This year's
theme is Akela's Round Up and will be held July 10-12 at the Martinsville
City Park & Pool. This is a great time for not only our Cub Scouts,
but also their leaders and parents as well. Your skills, ideas, and
creativity will be welcomed and needed. Please contact April Stevens
(Camp Director) at 765-342-0671 if you would be willing to help.
You will not regret helping and will find it to be a very rewarding
time with the boys. We hope to see each and every Cub and Cubber
from all over the District come and have a Great 2007 Day Camp.

August Roundtable
2007-2008 Program Kick Off
The August Roundtable will be held on August 9, 2007 at 7:00. Note
that there is an earlier start time than normal. It is very important
that all units have a representative at this roundtable, as we will
be passing out the annual program packets. Each unit and commissioner
will be receiving a packet full of valuable updated information to
help plan for the upcoming year. These packets contain information
on such things as programs, calendar, insurance, events, camping,
training and much more that will help your units provide the best
possible program for the Scouts. If you or someone from your unit
cannot attend this important meeting please contact your District
Executive to get this valuable information to you.

Roundtables
The Districts Cub and Scout Roundtables are held the second Thursday
of every month at the Martin County 4-H Community Center - Rt 50 between
Shoals and Loogootee. It is important that all Packs and Troops have
a representative attend. Roundtable is the time that District and
Council information along with special subjects important to your
Troop or Pack is passed out and discussed. The Roundtable will resume
the standard format. A hands-on skill will be presented and a training
presentation from Troop Resources on the theme of Scouting for next
month will be presented. If the time or places of these meetings
change, we will notify you as soon as possible. June is Round Up
Training for Cub Scout leaders. We almost had 100% last year, let's
see if we can get all our leaders-key people to the unit building
experience.

Get Ready for Day Camp
Mark your calendars now for the White River Trails District Day Camp.
The Theme for this year's camp is "Akela's Round Up" and will take
place June 12-14 at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds in Bedford. Registration
forms have been mailed out to all Scouts and additional information
will be available at your Pack's Blue and Gold Banquet and Roundtable
meetings.
Volunteers are needed in all areas and your help would be greatly
appreciated. Your Pack may also need help with walk-alongs during
the day camp. If you would like to help and have lots of fun while
helping make our day camp a continued success please call Patty Phelps
at 812-279-3884 or Trisha Pickering at 812-648-3167. Come join the
fun-filled day camp experience. You will not regret it!

Program Kick Off
The White River Trails District Program Kick Off will be held Thursday,
August 9th at 7:30 pm at Martin County 4-H Community Center - Rt 50
between Shoals & Loogootee. At this time the District and Council
activities for the upcoming year will be discussed along with the
rest of the program packet for the Troops and Packs. Each unit should
plan to have someone in attendance to pick up their unit's packet.

Spring Camporee
April 27-29 was the White River Trails District Spring Camporee at
Camp Sassafras in Linton. Buck Mullis, Judy Mullis, Mike Calvert
and Troop 407 did a wonderful job hosting this event. This year's
theme was Aiming High for Scouting and we had ten different events
to participate in. We had a great turn out of 168 Scouts and Scouters.
The weather for the camporee was clear and bright and that made all
of the White River Trails continued:

the events that much more exciting. We would like to thank the Buck
Creek Muzzleloaders Association for their participation in the camporee
and for providing all of the needed equipment for the shooting. We
would also like to thank all of the participating Troops and leaders
that helped run the events.

Join Scout Night Training - Thursday, June 14th Cub Scout Leaders!
Make plans to attend our June Roundtable! This will be our last Roundtable
before our Fall Program Kick-Off in August.
The training will be held during roundtable at the First United Church
at 7:00 pm, Thursday, June 14th. Everyone is invited to attend and
have a great night of Scouting Fellowship but at least one person
MUST be there for the School Night Training. You must attend this
training to qualify for the Fall Membership Awards!

Radio Merit Badge
The Amateur Radio Club will be putting on an event at Karst Farm Park
June 23rd, from 8:30-4:30. You will need the merit badge pamphlet,
a signed merit badge blue card, pencil and a sack lunch. Please call
Bill Wootton if you are interested in attending or to ask any questions
about the event. Bill Wootton 876-8689.

National Summertime Pack Award
Does your pack have something planned for the summer? Has every youth
been given the opportunity to attend Day Camp, Parent & Pal, Dad &
Lad, Mom & Me, or Webelos Camporee? Use the summertime program as
a way to bring more boys into your Cub Scout family.
All the pack has to do is plan and conduct a monthly
pack activity for June, July, and August. The whole idea
is to keep your pack together and doing things during the summer when
boys have the most free time. Plan a trip, tour, or attend a sporting
event. You can earn a certificate and streamer for your pack flag
and recognition pins for your Cub Scouts who participate in the summer
activities. A den who has 50% or more if its boys participating can
even earn a special den ribbon.
For more information and the National Summertime Pack Award Planning
Guide call or stop by the Council Service Center.
Fall Roundup and Kickoff
Here we go again! We are back in school and ready for a new Scouting
program year. Are you ready? Testaments to what good planning can
accomplish are the first units to have their School Night recruitment
date for the Program Kickoff.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, August 12th at 7:00 pm so you won't
forget to attend the Valley Trails District Program Kickoff at First
United Church in Bloomington.
It is vital that each unit has at least one leader attend. Fall recruitment
is very important to each and everyone of us. Our youth can't benefit from Scouting if they don't join! It is our job
as leaders to make this happen. Program packets will be passed out
and you will have an opportunity to meet and discuss issues with your
Commissioners and District Committee members.

Tiger Cubs
This is a great time for packs to recruit new Tiger Cubs! On June
1st all Kindergartners and their parents can be officially registered
members of your packs. This is a great way to strengthen your pack,
secure new leadership and bring a summer of excitement to new boys
and their families.
Go out and get those Kindergartners!

Program Kick Off - August 9th
Program Kick Off will be held on August 9, 2007 at 7:00 pm at the
normal roundtable location, First United Church, East 3rd St, Bloomington.
It is very important that all units have a representative at this
roundtable. The annual program packets will be passed out. Each
unit and commissioner will be receiving a packet full of valuable
updated information to help plan for the upcoming year. These packets
contain information on things such as programs, calendar, insurance,
events, camping, training, and much more that will help your units
provide the best possible program for their Scouts. We hope to see
you there!
